From heroes to criminals: the Paralympian was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing his girlfriend

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, amputated limbs of both legs in childhood, when he was 11 months. Despite this, the future runner went to regular school and even started to pursue athletics at the professional level.

Until 2014, the Paralympic athlete and gold medal winner was more often known as «the fastest man without legs». Success story of Pistorius inspired many people around the world, especially after his participation at the Olympic games 2012 in London. Then he competed along with the usual athletes, after which he received worldwide recognition and dozens of commercial proposals.

But after 2014, the situation has changed dramatically: all the world’s media began to write about his athletic achievements, and about the fatal accident with its participation.

The bloody incident occurred in 2013 on Valentine’s Day. As he confessed to Pistorius, he shot his girlfriend, a famous model Riva Steenkamp – mistaking her for a burglar. In September 2014, the judge decided that it was manslaughter, and sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment.

Relatives and defense did not agree with this decision and considered it unfair. After several appeals, the court announced a new, harsher sentence – to increase the sentence of Pistorius more than two times. This means that the athlete will have to serve about 13 and a half years instead of four remaining.

Chief justice Willy Seriti commented on his decision: «after Analyzing the arguments, it was hard for me to believe that the defendant sincerely repented».

The girl’s relatives despite the grief of loss, believe that now «each of them can move on.»
