San Jose will pay the homeless $15 per hour for picking up trash along the highway

San Jose is one of the richest cities in the country, but even here the unsightly piles of garbage lying along the shoulders of freeways and streams, among the glitz of Silicon valley.

The city presented a unique program to deal with this problem. In the beginning of the year, the Board approved funding in the amount of $200 thousand in subsidies for garbage collection. The end date of the program is not installed.

San Jose is going to provide employment to the homeless. The job will pay $15 per hour — above the minimum wage in the city. Since November, more than two dozen people will work 4-5 hours a day.

«It’s a way to give people the opportunity to become self-sufficient and to become self-sufficient. To give them some confidence,» says mayor Sam Liccardo.

Cristina Gonzalez, a victim of domestic violence and a recovering addict, lost his house, is one of the first contestants to participate in the program. She has several years working as a volunteer on Downtown Streets in exchange for the Essentials, but ready to go to work with a fixed salary. She hopes that this will help her to gain self-esteem and confidence.

The map shows about 40 hot spots with a large amount of debris. They are located along the 101 freeway and interstate highways I — 880 and 680, in addition to such major highways as a high-speed Capitol Expressway, Story, Tully and Senter Roads.

As reported by the mayor during a press conference last Thursday, the job of cleaning will oversee the departments of transportation and parks.
