In Puerto Rico burst dam: 70 thousand people evacuated

The population of Puerto Rico continues to suffer from the effects of hurricane Maria. On Friday broke through the old dam in the North-Western part of the island, which is 70 thousand people were at grave risk.

The dam is called Guajataca kept the water in the artificial lake area of about 2.5 square kilometers. After this region received 400 mm of rainfall, hydraulic structure could not stand the load. 2 settlements located downstream the river Rio Guajataca was under threat of flooding.

The operators of the dam reported her injury at around 14:10. Authorities immediately issued an alert about the emergency to evacuate due to flash flooding.

For residents of Isabel and Quebradillas immediately sent buses.

On Saturday, the national weather service reported the threat of complete destruction of the dam. A disaster can happen at any time.

316 metre-long dam was built about 90 years ago.

Recall that hurricane Maria destroyed the system of power supply and telecommunications in Puerto Rico. According to the authorities, to restore the infrastructure will take months.
