On Monday, police arrested a doctor from Manhattan who illegally wrote thousands of prescriptions for opioidssuch as oxycodone. The prosecution claims that the suspect did it without appropriate medical indications.

Dr. Martin Tesher wrote more than 14 thousand prescriptions for oxycodone (more than 2.2 million tablets) valued at more than $ 20 million for the period from June 2012 to January 2017. The Prosecutor’s office of the Eastern district say it is «disproportionate amount of the family doctor», especially considering the fact that on its website Tesher describes itself as «an adherent of the old school» and «good listener».

The prosecution also adds that the doctor doesn’t have specialized training in the treatment of pain.

Another patient Tesher was prescribed hundreds of pills at each visit (including oxycodone, xanax, morphine, and others), although the patient told the doctor that suffering from addiction to painkillers and trying to end it.

At the hearing, Tesher told the judge that he is in debt (133 thousand dollars), due to the fact that he is forced to pay for a private nurse who takes care of his sick wife. The doctor was released on bail in the amount of $ 250,000, which was able to pay his brother-in-law and wife. Tesher declined to comment on what is happening.

Acting attorney Bridget Rohde said that Tesher had used his position of a doctor in order to treat drug addicts, but in order to aggravate the situation for the sake of earnings.
