Shooting on the West Side Highway: two killed, 8 injured (news updated)

At least two people killed and 8 injured in a shooting on the West Side Highway. Currently the highway is closed South of West Houston Street in Lower Manhattan.

As one of the witnesses on his Twitter page, he heard that there was 3-4 shots. According to him, the sound of firing came from the Stuyvesant high school.

Details about the causes and circumstances of the incident have not been disclosed. In the police report that fulfills the signals of gunshots in the area.

From messages in social networks it is known that the shooter allegedly was driving a pickup and got people moving on the bike path in Lower Manhattan. He continued on his way, but at the intersection of Chambers and West crashed into a school bus. Since then his car could not go, he left it and started shooting.

Victims receive medical care at the scene, later they will be taken to Bellevue Hospital.

The suspect is detained and is in custody. Police are asking residents to avoid the area of Chambers Street/West street.
