Granddaughter men, survivors of the first U.S. mass shooting, escaped during a school shooting Florida

September 6, 1949, Howard Unruh fatally shot pistol Luger P08 13 people in 12 minutes, while walking in Camden, new Jersey. It was the first mass murder in US history. During the bloody incident, 12-year-old Charles Cohen lost his entire family. The boy survived, hiding in the closet.

Since then, 70 years have passed, and dear granddaughter of Cohen Carly Nowell had experienced almost the same thing that my grandfather. On Valentine’s Day, during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School FL, 18 a girl and her classmates were lucky to survive, a code expelled from school student Nicolas Cruz were killed mercilessly by their school mates from a semi-automatic rifle AR-15.

Children saved by a teacher, hiding with them in the closet. That day, 17 people were killed. According to Everytown for Gun Safety over the last 5 years, it was the 290th case of fire in American schools, among other places similar incidents.

A little away from the experience of stress, Carly told about your grandfather and unusual coincidence on Twitter: «This is my grandfather. At age 12 he hid in the closet when his family was killed during the first in America mass shooting. Almost 70 years later I, too, hid from the killer in the closet. These events must not be repeated. Something has to change.»

This is my grandpa. When he was 12 years old, he hid in a closet while his family was murdered during the first mass shooting in America. Almost 70 years later, I also hid in a closet from a murderer. These events shouldn’t be repetitive. Something has to change. #douglasstrong

Carly, in her younger years, had time to visit the verge of death, blames the incident on a gun.

«I was hiding in the closet for 2 hours. It’s all weapons. You weren’t there, you don’t know what it’s like. Guns give nasty people the opportunity to kill other people. This applies to all people whose lives ended abruptly because of the weapons,» the girl explained their position.

What is common between the experience Carly and her grandfather between the first and the last mass shooting in America?

Howard Unruh had schizophrenia, and 19-year-old Nicolas Cruz autism. In both cases, people died at the hands of mentally ill criminals who have been able to purchase firearms despite his maladies.

In accordance with the laws of Florida, the gun can be legal to buy at age 21, and shotguns 18. A limit on the number purchased at one time guns missing. Necessarily the completion of fire safety, but about check of mental health is not a word.

The rules of most States agree in the last paragraph with the laws of Florida. Recently, a dangerous gap was eliminated only in California, where the mentally ill took away the right to own guns.
