On Saturday (may 19) evening, lava flows had crossed highway 137 on the South coast and reached the shores of the Pacific ocean, cutting off part of the road for thousands of residents of the island. As a result, the air was acid vapours and microscopic particles of volcanic glass, and the level of sulfur dioxide increased three times.

According to the Department of civil defense County of Hawaii, this natural phenomenon is called laze. It is a term created from two words: «lava» (lava) and haze» (haze). It represents a mixture of hydrochloric acid fumes, smoke and particles of volcanic glass, which reacts with seawater and can reach a temperature of 2000° F (1093° C).
