In the U.S., the Jaguar escaped from the zoo and killed six animals

Today, July 14, in New Orleans closed the Audubon zoo after the Jaguar escaped from a cage and killed six other animals.

«For more than 100 years we have never had an incident like this, – said General Director of Audubon Nature Institute Ron Forman. – This is the biggest tragedy we’ve ever done.»

The incident happened at 7:20 local time, when three-year Jaguar Valerio escaped from its habitat. As a result of the escape, the male killed 4 alpacas, EMUs and foxes. Then the staff tracked down a wild animal and sedated him.

According to Dr. zoo Frank Burke, three other animals were injured and are currently under direct observation.

«We are very serious about this situation,» – said Burke.

Joel Hamilton, Vice President and chief curator of the zoo, said that the Jaguar will not be subject to euthanasia.

The management conducts internal investigation to understand how the animal escaped from the room. The zoo will begin work as usual on Sunday, July 15, at 10 am.

The CEO also added that in the coming days, staff will be consulted on this matter.

The Audubon zoo covers 58 acres (23 hectares) and is home to 2 thousand animals. It is home to rare white alligators.
