Cyclist from Australia was killed after a collision with a garbage truck in Manhattan

A tourist from Australia, who was riding a Bicycle, was hit by a garbage truck at the moment when the girl tried to Dodge the car, which drove on the bike path near Central Park.

The fatal incident occurred yesterday, August 10, at about 5pm on the Upper West side. According to police, 23-year-old Madison Jane Liden was driving on the bike path, but suddenly the parked car began to move, blocking her way. She decided to swerve into the roadway to avoid crashing into the car. At this point, she was hit by a passing garbage truck.

As reported by WABC co-owner of the Central Park Sightseeing, Madison went on vacation with a friend, which they rented bikes in City Hall. Passers-by, as her friend tried to give first aid before the ambulance, but it didn’t help. Madison was taken to the hospital where doctors confirmed her death.

The driver of the truck is at the police station. Sources told WABC that he is being held on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. At the moment no one has been charged.

«It is awful what happened, – said the mayor of new York bill de Blasio, who arrived at the scene. – We all know that in some cases we are losing innocent people, because the drivers don’t care.»

The mayor stressed that law enforcement must conduct a full investigation. «From my point of view, this is an example of how dangerous reckless driving», he added.
