Died, the former UN Secretary General and Nobel peace prize laureate Kofi Annan

Ghanaian diplomat and former UN Secretary General and Nobel peace prize laureate, Kofi Annan, has died at the age of 80 years. This information today, August 18, confirmed in the Kofi Annan Foundation.

Annan went to the world in a hospital in Bern (Switzerland) after a short illness. Beside him to the last were his wife Nan and their three children.

Annan, born in Ghana in 1938, was the seventh Secretary General of the UN from 1997 to 2006. He also entered the humanitarian organization Elders (Elder), which in 2007 created Nelson Mandela. In 2013, Annan became its Chairman.

In February 2012, the UN appointed a special envoy Diplomate of the organization and the League of Arab States in Syria to aid in the settlement of the military conflict.

Today, the current UN Secretary-General, antónio Guterres paid tribute to Annan, calling him a «guiding force of good.»

And the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo stated that the government and people are saddened by the news of the death of «one of the greatest of compatriots.»
