In Manhattan building collapse, people evacuated

Early Friday morning, December 21, in Lower Manhattan collapsed unoccupied building. As reported by the Fire Department of new York (FDNY), this happened on 21 Park Place at about 3.30.

According to the representative of the FDNY Frank Lieb, the facade of the building and two walls remained intact, so from the outside it looks like nothing happened, but inside everything collapsed ceiling on five floors.
«From the roof and to the first floor ceiling has developed in a «pancake». And outside there’s only minor damage on the left side,» said Lieb.

Many people living in the adjacent building woke up from the sirens of fire trucks. Probably some of the witnesses heard the crash and called 911.

«Firefighters climbed to the roof of our house and looked what happened to that building. They said everything inside the building collapsed. And indeed, through the window you can see only the sky was this morning,» — said a resident of a neighboring house.

The rescuers blocked the area of the collapse and just in case, for security purposes, were evacuated eight people from a nearby building.

While in the FDNY found it difficult to answer whether the building in repair, or it had to carry, but it was scaffolding. Fortunately, due to the fact that the collapse happened virtually overnight, no one was hurt.

«Lucky that the debris that fell through the scaffolding and fell to the pavement, nobody was hurt. Will be investigated, but perhaps one of the factors of the collapse was weather – strong wind and rain,» said Frank Lib.

Park Place will remain closed between Church Street and Broadway until 9 o’clock in the morning. At this time, a meeting of representatives of the FDNY with other departments, where the authorities decide what to do next.
