The new York immigration coalition will spend $1 million on a campaign for the issuance of driver’s licenses to illegal migrants

Leading the initiative group, advocating for the rights of illegal immigrants, announced his intention to begin an active campaign to promote the idea of the possibility of obtaining a driver license undocumented immigrants.

In this campaign, the new York immigration coalition (NYIC), which is the largest in the state law group immigration, plans to spend at least $1 million on TV, radio, and also on targeted ads in a social and digital media and the installation of billboards.

By estimations of lawyers, granting undocumented immigrants the right to driver’s license will affect about 265 000 people.

The supporters of the idea say that because of the lack of a driver’s license immigrants become extremely vulnerable. In some parts of new York such as long island, the car is the only way to get to school, to work or to go on reception to the doctor. And the usual stop for document checks by the police may lead to deportation from the country.

Besides the fact that it will help immigrants, it will lead to economic growth of the state of new York. According to the Institute of tax policy, the adoption of this law will increase the total annual income of the government by about $57 million besides the additional projected revenues may increase by $26 million due to purchase a car after obtaining a license.

In addition, streets will be safer if more people before you get behind the wheel, will pass through certain examinations to obtain the rights.

It is not surprising that 12 States across the country, as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico already allow all people of a certain age, regardless of immigration status and social security numbers, to drive.

Governor Cuomo promised to protect immigrants in new York from the trump stated that he supports granting driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants. But he gently rejected the idea of doing it through Executive order, because, in his opinion, this issue should be addressed in the legislative session.

In addition, there are ardent opponents of such proposals. The Chairman of the State conservative party Michael long, without hesitation, rejected that idea.

«Illegal immigrants already broke the law, so why would you give the offenders driver’s license?», — said long.
