The tragic incident occurred in Texas last Tuesday, March 5.

A policeman, who together with his colleagues responded to a call about possible infiltration, was killed by the home owner. The man believed that it got a burglar and opened fire as soon as he saw the stranger. Unfortunately, the wounded officer proved fatal.

As told in the police Department Midland (Midland Police Department – MPD), March 5, at about midnight local time, police received information about a triggered alarm in a private household. The call was responded to 28-year-old Nathan Heidelberg with a partner and another patrol crew. Arriving at the address, police began bypassing.

After checking the street, Heidelberg approached the front door and saw it ajar. The officer loudly warned about his intentions to enter the building and asked colleagues to cover for him. When the policeman was inside the house, he saw David Charles Wilson. The man thought it was a burglar and opened fire on the officer, but missed.

Immediately after the shot was fired, Nathan Heidelberg warned colleagues and managed to say that he was safe. Unfortunately, it was not so, because at the same moment the master of the house the second time pulled the trigger and seriously wounded a police officer. When the victim came to the aid of colleagues, he was lying on the floor unconscious.

Heidelberg was urgently taken to the nearest hospital but doctors ‘ efforts were in vain. The officer died from his injuries. As for Wilson, he was arrested and accused of manslaughter. He was later released from custody on bail, the amount of which amounted to $75 thousand.

The lawyer of the men made an official statement expressing his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased policeman. According to lawyer Brian Carney, Wilson was sure that his house entered a burglar and feared for his family. He believes that the tragedy is a fatal accident.

Nathan Heidelberg more than 5 years in the police. Colleagues describe him as a selfless and courageous person. Law enforcement officers are shocked by the death of one of the best officers, which was for many of them an example of true professionalism. The funeral of Nathan Heidelberg will take place on Friday, March 8.
