A teenager from Alabama committed suicide after constant bullying at school due to the fact that he was a homosexual.

Nigel Shelby, 15-year-old Huntsville High School student, committed suicide April 18. But Kamika Shelby, his mother, knew him as an energetic, sociable and cheerful child who did everything I could to make others smile.

«He was just special, — said the boy’s mother NBC News. — Nigel was the sweetest child. He was so sociable. He was always full of joy, full of light.»

Although Nigel brought happiness to those who loved him, he struggled with depression, trying to accept his sexual orientation.

«To make ComingOut at such a young age, it can be difficult, says Kamika in an interview with NBC News. You never know if you to take. He didn’t know whether I’m going to take this but this is my child, I love him.»

But even support the mother couldn’t help to go through the bullying that he had faced in his team-mates.

Kamika remembers the last moments she spent with Nigel the night before his death.

«He told me, «Mom, I’m going to learn better in school.» He kissed me and told me that he loves me — says Kamika. — It was the last conversation I had with my child.»

The death of Nigel confirms a disturbing reality in which we live: the national survey 2015, conducted by the Centers for control and prevention of diseases, about 43% of gay men, lesbians and bisexuals, students in the senior classes, seriously thinking about attempting suicide, compared to about 15% of their heterosexual classmates.

«He struggled with his identity… real depression really is a disease,» emphasizes Kamika.

After the news of the death of Nigel Huntsville High School released a statement in support of the family of Shelby.

«We sympathize and pray for the family of Nigel. Parents, please talk to your students about the death of Nigel. Be aware and pay attention to changes in your child. Talk to them about what they see, about the words that they say and the actions they can take to change the situation. We have to be better,» — said in a statement.

Also in support of the boy were made by many famous personalities, including singer Justin Bieber and his wife, model Hailey Baldwin, as well as a businesswoman and contestant of reality show «The Apprentice: Martha Stewart» bethenny Frankel.
