Shooting at the University of North Carolina: student knocked down arrow and died protecting others

Wednesday, may 1, in North Carolina honored the memory of the students killed during the mass shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC-Charlotte).

During the shooting, 2 people killed, 4 more injured. Victims, police say, could be much greater if not for the desperate courage of the 21-year-old student named Riley Howell.

He lunged at the shooter and hit that down. Sam Riley later died of wounds in hospital.

«It was in his nature to fight for the lives of others,» said a friend of the deceased, David Belnap.

Riley Howell knocked down the attacker, winning enough time for the first officers arrived on call to those captured arrow — Tristan Andrew Terrell.

According to the chief of police Charlotte-Mecklenburg Kerr Putney, the shooter had plenty of ammo, and didn’t look like he limited himself to two victims, if not for the courage Riley.
«His sacrifice saved lives,» said Putney.

22-year-old Terrell charged with two murders and four attempted murders. His first appearance in court is scheduled for today, may 2.

According to the press-Secretary of the UNC Charlotte Buffy Stevens, Terrell was admitted to a University, but abandoned his studies this semester.

«I just went into the audience and shoot the guys,» said the shooter to journalists on Tuesday when he was arrested.

According to the Associated Press, the shooter’s grandfather said that his grandson had autism spectrum disorder, but was «smart as possible, smart enough to learn foreign languages».

The girl’s father dead, Riley Howell said he was not surprised that his daughter’s boyfriend rushed to the arrow, without thinking about saving your own life.

According to Kevin Westmoreland, whose daughter Lauren met with Howell for nearly six years, Howell would make a good fireman or a paramedic.

«If Lauren was with Riley, he would have stood up and in front of a moving train to cover it,» said Westmoreland.
