A student with speech afraid to lose their licences after a strange test on the road

The student with impaired speech may lose the right because he was slow to answer the questions of the police from long island during a bizarre incident when his car was stopped for inspection.

Last year Brian Siegel (23 years old) was driving his Subaru home in cold spring Harbor with his mother and sister, when behind him flashed lights and sounded the siren of a police car, telling the young man to stop.

Brian’s parents say that the police officer Suffolk James Garside never explained why he stopped the car and asked the young man one question: «This is not an emergency, but if it were, You would know what to do?»

Confused and worried Brian, who is suffering from speech disorders and, therefore, speaks very slow, couldn’t answer the question immediately.

Brian told The Post: «I couldn’t know what he’s going to do. It made me nervous. He said, «You know what you are doing?» And then didn’t give me enough time to tell him what I was doing. I knew what to do, but it is too quickly made about me insights and gave me enough time.»

Garside recorded a license plate from Brian and refused to listen to the boy’s mother, Sharon Siegel, who tried to explain that her son’s speech disorder. «Don’t talk,» he said, interrupting the mother attempts to intervene.

The family insists that Brian was driving carefully, and they can’t understand the reason for the stop. In a few minutes Garside let Brian go, not even issuing a written warning.

The family had almost forgotten about this incident, when a few weeks ago at the state Department for registration of vehicles has come a letter telling Brian to undergo a medical examination and to re-take the driving test. In a letter dated March 8, it was said: «We received information expressing concern about Your ability to drive a car». In the letter it was noted that if a young person does not appear, its licence will be terminated.

The following letter confirmed that this decision has led to «a request of the police Department».

The family was shocked. If the officer has any doubts about the ability of a young person to drive a car, why let him continue the journey. «In the car were even 2 people who have rights,» says Sharon. «Why didn’t he tell any of us to sit behind the wheel instead of Brian?»

Brian drives a car for about 2 years and never had an accident. Machine needed for part-time work in the summer. He believes that Garside misread it and jumped to conclusions.

Candace Jols from the Association of people with speech disorders Learning Disability Association of America commented on the incident, stating that many people with speech impairments just need a bit more time to process information and they are perfectly able to drive. Difficulties usually occur when the person is just trying to get the rights, but not when they had been there, he explained Jols, which added that have never heard that someone was in a situation similar to the story of Brian. She said: «People should not be punished for what they have problems with speech.»

If Garside will abandon its claim to Brian again handed over to the law, this will be enough for the young man had to go through the excitement of preparation for the exam which he already passed.

However, the officer who was highly decorated for saving the lives of people who did not answer the questions about stopping the machine a young man.

Police in Suffolk at the moment are considering a complaint to stop the car Garagem.
