Slavery in citizenship: the woman convicted of that 9 years of keeping native Sri Lanka as a «slave»

On Thursday a jury sentenced a woman from new Jersey, which forced native Sri Lanka to work on it for 9 years without payment, and even married her, so the victim could remain in the country.

Prosecutors said that Aliya Imad Faleh al Hunaiti transported a woman in the United States in 2009 and forced to remove her house in woodland Park and Secaucus, as well as absolutely free take care of her children. They also said that al Hunaiti forced the victim to sleep in the kitchen.

The defendant forced the foreigner to violate the terms of stay in the country specified in the visa, and then, as shown by the prosecution in 2018 has forced the victim to engage her in marriage to the right to the official stay in the country and they were not deported.

The United States attorney in the district of new Jersey Craig Carpenito said: «In this case, the defendant treated the victim like a slave».

After the 6-day hearing in the court jury pondered a verdict for 2 hours. They recognized the defendant guilty of forced labor, harboring a foreign national for financial gain and forced marriage. The maximum penalty for forced labor is 20 years in prison, while 2 other charges carry a penalty of a maximum of 5 years in prison each.

Final sentencing is scheduled for September.
