Man treated for rabies after he was bitten by hiding in cover iPad bat

A resident of new Hampshire is undergoing treatment for rabies after last week in his own house he was bitten by a bat.

Roy Sivertson (86 years old) told WMUR that Thursday night he held quite as usual. He sat down in his favorite chair, took the iPad and opened the case to take advantage of the very gadget. After about an hour the man felt a sharp pain prick in the finger, something like a bee sting.

«I looked back and saw a bat, which is located between the rear panel of the gadget and the case,» says the man. He quickly clenched the case, that the bat did not run away, and then released her on the street.

«When I woke up this morning the mouse was still there, and I thought that she was all right,» he says. But that night, when Roy saw that she was still there, he checked the condition of the animal and saw that she was dead.

«After that, I realized that I may have a problem,» said Siversten. And concerned that bats can be infected with rabies, he called New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game. The operator who answered the call instructed him to go to the hospital and be checked. Later in the Department of Fish and Game confirmed that the instincts of man did not disappoint. The mouse has been infected with rabies.

According to the Mayo Clinic, treatment includes an injection of immunoglobulin, which prevents the development of disease. If the infection has settled in the body, that to cure rabies, it is impossible and usually the patients die. After the injection of immunoglobulin within 14 days the patient receives 4 vaccines that the body developed antibodies to fight the virus.

Siverston said that the doctors convinced him that he’ll be fine, though how the bat got into his house and iPad remains a mystery.

According to the Centers for control and prevention of diseases of the United States, rabies die annually, more than 55 thousand people, and most deaths occur in Asia and Africa.
