Three people were killed and at least two others injured after a rock fell on Grandview beach in Encinitas (CA), just North of San Diego.
Part of the rock — the size of 30 feet by 25 feet — broke off and crashed down on the guests on Friday, August 2, around 14:55. Some of the beach goers were under the rubble: according to rescuers, the wreckage was so severe that remove them and pull the victims managed only with the help of special equipment.
One of the injured woman, whose identity is being withheld — was pronounced dead on the spot. Two were taken to the hospital in critical condition. On Saturday morning, local authorities reported that rescue them failed. One of the victims is now under the supervision of doctors in a stable condition, the other refused hospitalization.

At the moment, the beach, Ponto beach in carlsbad to the area South of Grandview, is closed to visitors.

It is not known what was the cause of the collapse, but experts believe that most likely it occurred due to erosion caused by years of rains and pounding waves on the rocks.

This is not the first such case. 19 years ago, January 16, 2000, in the same area killed 30-year-old Rebecca Kovalchuk of Encinitas. The woman was sitting on the beach watching her husband being engaged in surfing, when she collapsed rock chip.
