Near O’hare airport — explosion and leakage of ammonia (photos)

Today, about 7.15 a.m. an explosion occurred and the leak of ammonia in Elk Grove Village, a suburb of Chicago, located very close to international airport O’hare.

The explosion occurred at the intersection of Tonne Road and Touhy Avenue in the building product company Grecian Delight Foods.

All the surrounding streets are immediately blocked, employees and people from nearby buildings were evacuated because of the danger of leakage of ammonia.
The eyewitness of incident, Ken Griffin, owner of auto parts store Pro Finish across the street, told CBS Chicago that the blast demolished part of the facade in Grecian Delight.
«All employees were evacuated,» added Griffin.

Representatives of the fire Department Elk Grove Village has not yet announced whether the victims of the explosion.

Ammonia is most commonly used in large refrigeration plants. Leakage of ammonia can be dangerous if you inhale it. Acute ammonia poisoning threatens suffocation, delirium, lose vision and skin. At high concentrations of ammonia vapors is possible even death.
