Austrian police make new arrests in connection with terrorist attack in Vienna

Austrian police made several arrests in connection with the terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday evening. At least four people were killed in the attack.

The shooting began at 8:00 pm outside the city's main synagogue, authorities said, as dozens of people were enjoying themselves in local restaurants and bars on the last evening before the quarantine began. According to Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, among those who died from his injuries were «an elderly man, an elderly woman, a young passer-by and a waitress.» Kurtz also said that the «brave» policeman who tried to stop the shooter was in a hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said that one of the suspects, killed by the police 9 minutes after the attack, was a 20-year-old man of North Macedonian descent with Austrian citizenship. He was convicted last year of liaison with ISIS after attempting to travel to Syria to join a terrorist group — but was released early after 22 months in prison.
