Among those arrested in connection with the assassination of the President of Haiti are two Americans

Two alleged Haitian Americans — one of whom is allegedly a former bodyguard of the Canadian embassy in Port-au-Prince — have been arrested in connection with the assassination of the Haitian president, a senior Haitian official said on Thursday.

Matthias Pierre, Haiti’s elections minister, told the Associated Press that James Solages was among six people arrested in the 36 hours since the murder of brutal President Jovenel Moiz by armed men at his home in the wee hours of Wednesday.

According to Pierre, four other suspects in the attack were killed, and two have not yet been found.

Pierre did not provide additional details about Solages ‘ past and did not give the name of the second American of Haitian origin, who, according to him, was arrested.

Solages described himself as a «certified diplomatic agent,» an advocate for children and an aspiring politician on the website of a charity he founded in 2019 in south Florida to help residents.

In his biography for the charity, Solages said that he previously worked as a bodyguard at the Canadian Embassy in Haiti. Calls to the foundation and employees of the Solages charity organization from the media either did not pass, or remained unanswered.

After the assassination, Prime Minister Claude Joseph took over the leadership of Haiti with the support of the police and the armed forces — and on Thursday asked people to reopen businesses and return to work.
