The United States will send high-ranking officials of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to Port-au — Prince as soon as possible to assist in the investigation of the brutal murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, the White House said on Friday in response to an official request from the Haitian government for assistance.

«The United States continues to consult closely with our Haitian and international partners to support the Haitian people after the assassination of the president,» White House press Secretary Jen Psaki said at a press briefing.

Haiti’s ambassador to the United States, Boccit Edmond, said on Friday that the Haitian government’s request outlines the «key role» that the FBI and the Justice Department can play in the investigation of the murder.

Edmond added that the Haitian government has also asked the United States to impose sanctions on those responsible for the attack in accordance with the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the US president to refuse entry and impose economic sanctions against any foreign person responsible for extrajudicial executions or human rights violations.

«We look forward to working with our American partners in the search for truth and justice,» Edmond said in a series of messages on Twitter.

Earlier, the United States confirmed that two Americans were among those arrested in the murder case.

«We are aware of the arrest of two US citizens in Haiti, and we are closely monitoring the situation,» a State Department official told CNBC.

«We remain committed to cooperating with the Haitian authorities in the investigation.»
