De Blasio will fine homeowners for harassment of tenants

At the ceremony in the Manhattan measures of new York bill de Blasio signed a package of bills that protect tenants from illegal harassment of tenants. Some homeowners of new York faces a fine in the amount of 5 thousand USD.

«We will not waver in the fight against abusive landlords,» said de Blasio activists of the Club of the older generation in new York who gathered on the Upper West side. The mayor said that the harassment of tenants, «one of the most evil side effects of the economic boom of new York».

A new set of laws increases the minimum penalty to be levied on landlords, from 1 thousand to 2 thousand dollars, and increases the penalty to 5 thousand dollars for owners who have already been convicted of harassment of tenants during the past five years.

The bills also seek to prevent homeowners to extend the construction and demolition of buildings with the aim to exert pressure on their tenants. The city’s Department of buildings will increase the inspection of construction projects and demolition of buildings where people live.
