Cuomo banned the state to ask citizens about their immigration status

Public authorities, including the police, are forbidden to ask anyone about his immigration status in accordance with Friday’s order of the Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The police cannot ask if the person is in the United States legally, if he’s calling the police as a crime victim, witness or seeking other assistance.

Public authorities cannot ask about immigration status if it is not expressly required by law or the information they need to deliver benefits or services.

The order is the latest attempt by democratic Governor in the fight against the massive detection and deportation of illegal immigrants in new York.

«As Washington inclined to abandon a reasonable immigration policy, we are taking steps to help protect all new Yorkers from unfounded prosecution by the government,» said Cuomo in a statement.

«New York was an outstanding state due to the contribution of immigrants from all corners of the globe, and we will not let the politics of fear and intimidation has divided us,» he added.

The Governor does not require approval of the legislature of the state, but can be challenged in court.
