This week 46-year-old resident of Brooklyn sued the city of new York a large sum for the harm. In 2012 Karen brim entered the fray with police officers and it ended for her arrest and a hospital bed.
30 APR 2012 around noon Karen brim was sweeping and mopping the floors in the stairwell of his house, which rented apartments to rent. It was built in the Brooklyn area of Flatbush.
She ran past the two officers and one police Sergeant, chasing four teenagers, which they noticed on the roof of a three storey building. None of them lived here, and of the identity documents, when they were not.
Teens wearing handcuffs, law enforcement officers began to go down them stairs. Brim and her son Donta Blackwood chose to intervene, siding with the prisoners.
They tried to prove to police that teenagers – only visitors and not trespassers. But it turned into a dispute, in which the woman pushed. She fell from the stairs down the stairs and landed badly on his knee.
The police arrested her under the pretext that Karen hit one of the officers of his broom on the head. That’s not true, the detectives investigating the case, became known much later.
Due to the fact that the woman was seriously injured, she was sent to medical center Kings County Hospital. After examining the leg of Karen, the doctors concluded that it would require several surgeries.
During all 17 daysthat brim was in the hospital, her wrist and ankle were handcuffed to the bed with handcuffs, and at the door on duty police officer. Relatives and friends of the victim who came to visit her, he wasn’t allowed in the ward.
Been released, Karen brim filed a lawsuit in the court, declaring himself the victim of unlawful arrestand was required to reimburse her losses. The proceedings lasted several years, but finally came to an end.
The jury ruled that the brim needs to obtain from the city authorities compensation in the amount of $250,000.
Moreover, the losing party is obliged to pay for the services of three lawyers of the plaintiff. This amount is $375,000.
