New York, though a city of refuge, however, Immigration and customs enforcement, U.S. (ICE) began to make more arrests of migrants in the courts. This is stated in a new report by the Project for the protection of immigrants.
If in 2016, the state was only 11 incidents with arrests of migrants in the courts, this year such cases have 110 (the majority in new York). And this number does not include arrests committed literally outside the courthouse, reports the New York Daily News.
«Such a sharp increase in arrests is evidence of violations of the rights of immigrants,» says lawyer Lee Wong. «People who seek justice should not fear more for their freedom».
The report also stated that the majority of those arrested had no prior convictions or criminal offences, but only petty offenses like drinking alcohol in public places.
ICE agents act not only in the criminal courts, the arrests were registered in the family courts, juvenile, trafficking and so on.
«We gave ICE and other Federal officials both at the local and at the national level, our serious concern,» said Patch, the representative of the judiciary of the state of new York the Strike is Calvin. «They need to better protect migrants in court buildings».
According to Tina Luongo of the legal aid Society, and these arrests scare their clients in every borough at a time as facilities of the courts should be available to everyone.
