Thursday, November 30, the city Council of new York passed a bill prohibiting conversion therapy intended to «turn» gay in person with a traditional orientation.
According to a new document charging for therapy designed to change sexual orientation or gender identity of the client, will be considered a violation of the law.
«Conversion therapy is barbaric and inhuman, said Council speaker Melissa mark-Viverito. – We want to ensure that any person could live without fear that it will turn into something that he isn’t.»
This document must still be signed by mayor bill de Blasio, but most experts believe he’ll go for it. The new bill on conversion therapy was more stringent than similar laws in most States.
The main difference is that in new York decided to ban such therapy, not only for minors but also for adults. The specialists who treat free of charge, for example, members of the clergy, will not be subject to the law. Violators can face a penalty of $ 1,000 for each individual case.
Critics of the law argue that adults should be able to make a choice – to undergo the therapy or not. But the Council still felt that with this step they can to protect customers from fraud. For example, some medical professionals claim that change of sexual orientation or gender identity of the person contains in itself potential danger to the psyche.
