FDNY accused of discrimination

FDNY discriminare black employees, denying them salary increase and promotion. This is stated in a lawsuit filed by several employees of the FDNY and EMS in Federal court in Manhattan.

«All these years I’ve watched people come in and, having the only summary, no confirmed data are taken to higher positions,» — said in an interview with AMNY Stephanie Thomas, the plaintiff, who worked in the FDNY computer technician for over 29 years. «One of the things that bothers and disappoints me as an employee is that they have information about me first – hand- personal data of the case, information on awards received for many years – and yet they turn a blind eye and won’t let me rise above».

Another plaintiff Annette Richardson works in the FDNY since 2006 and since 2009 is head of the personnel Department. Taking this position, the woman received a salary of $ 69,000, which according to her, 23 000 dollars less than received its predecessor, a white male. Over the past 11 years, the salary of women has been revised only twice, both times she was expecting, an increase of 8%, but the volume of work increased, says Richardson.

The plaintiffs demand compensation of the caused moral harm and compensation of the shortfall due to the failure in raising funds. Among other things, outraged FDNY employees are asked to appoint an external supervisor who would monitor the observance of the principle of equality in the Department, as well as increasing the number of black representatives in the ranks of the civilian employees of the FDNY.
