Cuomo pardoned 61 people before the New year, including 18 immigrants

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday pardoned a convicted 61. Despite the strict regulations imposed by the presidential administration, in respect of breach of the immigration rules, the number of those pardoned also included 18 immigrants who have committed crimes of little gravity.

«While the Federal government continues to equate migrants to immigrants and threatens to divide families, followed by deportation, these actions are an important step towards a more just, tolerant and more compassionate new York,» said Cuomo in a statement.

Among the pardoned a 57-year-old woman-transgender Lorena Borjas, in 1994, was prosecuted for a crime committed by her due to the fact that she was a victim of human trafficking. Later Borges worked as an advocate, representing the interests of transgender people and immigrants.

«Lucky» was and 53-year-old Freddy Perez, who was convicted of selling a banned substance (apparently, recreational drugs) in 1993. Pérez — immigrant from the Dominican Republic, said that he hopes to become a U.S. citizen in accordance with the law.

Before the official announcement of the act of clemency on Wednesday, Cuomo has pardoned 7 immigrants who were deported recently.

The Governor also included in the grant of pardon by Dominic DuPont, nephew of the actor, Michael K. Williams, convicted for the murder. He has served 20 years of a 25-year-laid the sentence of the court and was pardoned for his active civic position and work as a consultant on youth in a correctional facility in green haven.
