Dismissal of or discrimination against women who breastfeed at work is now prohibited under the laws of the state of new Jersey. The relevant law was signed by Governor Chris Christie on 8 January 2018, along with a number of other interrelated regulations.

In announcing the bill signing, Christie chided the Association of business and industry new Jersey that he called «illogical opposition» to the legislation.

«During my life I did everything I could to maintain a favorable environment for mothers in the workplace new Jersey. I am seriously concerned that the main lobby group business does not share these aspirations,» said Christie.

In accordance with the new legislation, employers must give nursing mothers a break and a suitable private place for breastfeeding.

In addition to new Jersey, similar rules are already in place in 48 other States, including Washington and the virgin Islands.

The state legislature, led by Democrats, voted for the adoption of the law unanimously.

«No woman should be ashamed and should not feed your child anything else instead of breast milk,» said the Democrat Valerie Vainieri Hall. «The law allows women to breast feeding or rocking baby to work, without fear of consequences.»
