On Facebook sued for discrimination against tenants

To the urgent challenges of billionaire Mark Zuckerberg added another problem. Several companies and organizations have filed a class action lawsuit against Facebook. The main claim is the provision of real estate companies information about users, as well as service advertising platform, which can be used to exclude people, which is for landlords to «junk«.

As a rule, the number of users were families with children, women, youth and other groups entering the USA under the concept of «protected class«. Due to the information received, landlords can identify the target group that should not show ads for the surrender of a certain type of real estate and similar ads.

The plaintiffs argue that this case violated the law on fair housing issues (Fair Housing Act, FHA). To support his statement with facts, the initiative group has created a fake estate Agency and under his name called the Facebook. Fictitious real estate company was issued a list of users, formed by gender and marital status, which can not show the advertising content.

In the past Facebook has been repeatedly criticized for discriminatory advertising of housing. In 2016, the publication ProPublica conducted an investigation, which revealed that the advertising platform of the company allows to exclude certain groups based on race users.

«Facebook recently announced that its new policy of rapprochement with users. However, these claims will remain empty until, until the company solve the problem of discrimination in its advertising platform,» said Katherine Rosenfeld, one of the lawyers from the plaintiffs.
