Medvedev said Russia should raise the retirement age

The Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, speaking on state television, said that the Russian government is planning to raise the retirement age. One of the reasons is the crisis in the economy caused by Western sanctions.

According to officials, the leadership of the country is very close to the final stage of development of the bill. It is expected to be presented in the second half of 2018. As Medvedev said, the retirement age was set back in the 40’s and does not correspond to modern realities.

«Discussions have been going on for more than one year. Already carried out a serious examination of all these issues. So we are on the threshold of starting to discuss it at the legislative level», — said the Prime Minister.

Now in Russia men retire at 60 and women at 55. For a long time in the country was not raised the question of raising this threshold, as the authorities did not want to cause discontent among the population. However, in the context of economic crisisresulting from the sanctions imposed for violations of international law, the Russian leadership is compelled to go on unpopular measures.

The government wants to use it for stimulation of growth of the economy at that time, as Western sanctions inflict considerable damage.

Ex-Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said recently that in the coming years the number of pensioners considerably will increase, and the number of working Russians, on the contrary, will decrease. Because of this, the pension Fund will be fully razbalansirovat, and the financial burden will be very heavy for the country.

According to FIU, about 44 million people receive retirement, for an average of 13 thousand rubles. Deductions from salaries of employed citizens of the Russian Federation cover only half of costs, and 3.5 trillion rubles coming from the state budget.

According to the Director of the Institute of demography HSE Anatoly Vishnevsky, in subsequent years, the Russians are waiting for a significant decrease in the active population. As a consequence, the authorities will have to face another challenge against FIU.
