The Governor of new York Andrew Cuomo finally endorsed the bill, according to which school bus drivers will be required to pass a selective screening for drugs and alcohol.
A new bill signed by Cuomo, also prohibits bus drivers to drink alcohol eight hours before their shift. At the moment, this period is six hours.
The need for such a document arose for a reason. The initiators of the law claim that since October 2012, in new York state was recorded at least four incidents with participation of drivers of school buses. They were arrested during a service because they were in a state of alcoholic intoxication.

At the moment only 10% of bus drivers tested for drugs and alcohol. In the future, the cost of this procedure, by law, be offset by state authorities.
New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT), representing the school bus industry, praised the signing of the law. The Association noted on his Twitter page that this new measure «will increase the safety of students.»

The law will take effect in four months. He was initiated a member of the new York state Assembly and former teacher Donna Lupardo.
