19 new laws which will come into force in early 2019

From 1 January 2019 shall enter into force quite a number of laws. From changes in the minimum wage, prohibitions on Smoking in certain places and sale of tobacco products in pharmacies, to the innovations in the laws governing the circulation of weapons.

  • New York increases minimum wage: with 11 or more employees — $15, up to 10 jobs — $13,50, for workers of fast food — $12,75. $12 dollars for long island and Westchester, $11,10 for the other parts of the state of new York.
  • Pharmacies from the 1st of January are not allowed to sell cigarettes or other tobacco products. The ban will also apply to institutions in the territory of which there are pharmacies, such as large stores and supermarkets.
  • Enters into force a ban on Styrofoam for businesses in new York. Shops and catering establishments in new York can no longer offer, sell, or hold food containers of polystyrene, such as cups, plates, bowls and trays.
  • Workers can spend with their infants 10 weeks to care for a sick family member or to help families when a family member goes abroad on active military service, benefits will increase from 50% to 55% of salary.
  • Smoking on state beaches and in the parks of new Jersey will be banned. Local communities can opt out and allocate small areas for smokers. The law also prohibits vaping, but allows cities to establish a designated Smoking area at 15% of the area of any beach or the Park. The law takes effect on January 16.
  • New Jersey requires residents to have health insurance or pay a fine. Residents face a fine of 2.5% of income or $695 on the taxpayer, whichever is greater. The maximum family penalty is $2085.
  • A protective order violence with a firearm (new Jersey) will allow state courts to issue a decision on confiscation of weapons from individuals representing «a grave danger» to themselves or others.
  • Now genderqueer new Jersey and new York will be easier to change the gender in the birth certificate. The new law allows residents to make changes to the documents depending on how they identificeret yourself. Parents of newborns will also be able to choose «X» in the column gender.
  • Employers in new York must provide places for changing diapers in all public buildings regardless of gender.
  • Also, employers in new York will need to provide private lactation rooms for pumping milk.
  • All employees of new York will have to undergo training in prevention of sexual harassment. This will occur on an annual basis.
  • Travel (Uber/Lyft) that starts and ends within new Jersey, will be taxed at $0.50 for one and $0.25 for joint visits. The money will be used to help the schools.
  • Airbnb users will have to pay the same taxes and fees for temporary housing, and hotels and motels. Under the bill, permanent rental housing will continue to be exempt from this tax.
  • In new Jersey, was taken six of new legislation on the safety of the school bus. In accordance with these new laws, parents will be able to send their children to school knowing that the school buses and the drivers follow the «extremely high standards ensure the safety of students».
  • Pharmacies will allow consumers to return unused prescription drugs (narcotic drugs) using the free package or envelope with a Deposit.
  • Firefighters-volunteers, spent at least five years, with certain types of cancer will be entitled to receive disability benefits in the state.
  • Special scanners are used in prisons of new York to detect any concealed weapons.
  • Examination of the prostate gland in new York will be free of charge. Health insurance plans are necessary, so that consumers know about the new benefit.
  • In Connecticut, employers are prohibited from asking potential employees about their past history of wages, unless they voluntarily provide this information. This law was passed to prevent inequalities in pay.
