«New York has a vital interest in protecting the physical and psychological well-being of minors, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, as well as in protecting minors from the serious harms caused by efforts to change sexual orientation,» reads the document.

A Democrat for Governor Cuomo is expected to sign a decision this week. The ban of conversion therapy is in line with its officially declared protection strategy of the LGBT community.

A ban on gay conversion therapy for minors has been repeatedly taken by the Assembly, but was rejected by the Republican Senate. Today the democratic majority in the Senate did what was long promised. Prepared in the same legislative measures for the protection of the rights of sexual minorities in trials, and eliminating gender definitions in different standards of human rights.

For 17 years, transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers have fought for the basic recognition that they matter under New York law.

So today, the 42 votes against 19 legislators voted for the law on the prevention of sex discrimination (GENDA), which sets out protection for transgender people in employment, housing, education and stay in public areas and provides them with the recognition, in accordance with existing laws on crimes of hate. This makes new York the 24th state along with the district of Columbia, to provide such protection based on gender identity.

The author of bills Senator brad Hoylman, celebrated the victory on Twitter: «we are here Today, in the Senate of the state of new York, to chart a new course. We are here for each transgender person in new York who do not observe gender aspects, which have waited too long for recognition. Join. We are here to fight for you.»
