Catholic leaders demanded to stop Governor Cuomo from the Church for the legalization of abortion before 24 weeks

Catholic leaders of the United States demand that Andrew Cuomo, signed the law expanding and strengthening abortion rights in new York, was excommunicated from the Church. Put whether Archbishop Timothy Dolan the head of the state Church such a harsh punishment?

On January 22, the Governor of new York signed a law on reproductive health, adopted earlier by the Senate and the state Assembly. The document asserts the right of all women to abortion without restriction on the period of pregnancy up to 24 weeks. At late pregnancy abortions are carried out solely on medical grounds: risk to the health of the woman or the viability of the fetus.

Many were outraged by the fact that the Governor gave a decree in honor of the adoption of the law to illuminate the light tower of the world trade center and bridges and buildings in Albany.

The bishops of new York said that the state was «more dangerous for women and their unborn children.»

«I understand the anger and fury of those calling to excommunicate Cuomo» — said on Fox News the Bishop of Albany Edward Sharfenberger, naming, however, the excommunication of «last resort». However, «as the Governor continues to distance itself from the community, this, unfortunately, can lead to excommunication,» added the Prelate.

Thursday, January 24, Bishop Rick stika of Knoxville (tn) upheld the conviction of the Church of the actions of Cuomo.

«Voting for the law is so disgusting and vile that justifies this act (the excommunication. — USA.one), «wrote of stick on Twitter.

Enough is Enough. Excommunication is to be not a punishment but to bring the person back into the Church. It’s like medicine for them. But this vote is so hideous and vile that it warrants the act. But thankfully I am not in that positon. Very sad.

However, the representative Dolan Joseph Zwilling made clear that the excommunication of the Governor from the Church is unlikely:

«In accordance with Church law, the excommunication is not the appropriate response for a politician who supports or votes for legislation that promotes abortion.»

In the case of «a serious situation with a parishioner, the priest is obliged to resolve this issue personally with the member.»

«I don’t believe that excommunication will have effect, as many politicians would have regarded [it] as intimidation by the Church and felt that it will give them political advantage,» said Joseph Zwilling.
