This town looked like a war zone. The residents require to remove the barbed wire

Residents of border cities in Arizona are outraged: the Federal government has turned their city into a «war zone», stretching along the border wall several rows of barbed wire.

Yesterday, February 6, the city Council of Nogales passed a resolution condemning innovation. The city bordering the Mexican namesake, wants to have removed all barbed wire installed within its territory. Otherwise the local authorities would sue, warned mayor Arturo Garino.

Over the weekend, the guardsmen were laid along sections of the boom 6 rows of wire.

«The wire is deadly, the mayor declared the newspaper Nogales International. And I really don’t know what they were thinking when all this is pulled over the ground.»

According to the resolution of the city Council, barbed wire can injure or kill anyone who tries to climb the wall, so it should not be place in the centre of Nogales.

«We had a delegation from Nebraska, which saw the military pulled along the wall concertina wire, and one of them said, «It looks like a war zone»» — outraged the head of the Presbyterian binational ministry Frontera de Cristo, mark Adams.

«In Nogales, we’ve learned that the Federal government makes decisions about our surroundings, says Arizona Daily Star a local resident Evan Corey. But barbed wire is a much more aggressive way than those we’ve seen before.»

Customs and border protection (Customs and Border Protection — CBP) commented on the situation. Wire laid supposedly after the request «about additional protection in urban areas at high risk, which usually are exploited by criminal smuggling organizations.» Who exactly made this request, CBP did not elaborate.

By words a press-the Secretary of the CBP, Corrie Schiermeyer, the fence was strengthened in the areas outside the city. According to her, in places with high pedestrian activity barbed wire laid only in the upper part of the wall.

«Installed signs in Spanish and English, warning people about these dangers, and deny access,» — said in a statement CBP.

The economy of Nogales, where about 20 thousand people, largely dependent on Mexican shoppers and cross-border trade. Over the last few years the number of illegal crossings in the area declined sharply.

The mayor of Guarino appealed to the Senator from Arizona March, Maccalli. Policy spokesman told the Associated Press that they are studying, what can I do in this situation.
