New York became the first state to ban declawing cats

Cats in new York are now free to tear the claws sofas, window frames and curtains.

Monday, July 22, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill prohibiting the removal of claws of cats that makes new York the first state in the country to ban this practice.

«We will ensure that the animals are no longer subjected to these inhumane and unnecessary procedures,» said Cuomo in a statement.

The bill passed by the state legislature in June, effective immediately.

The declawing of cats requires a partial amputation of the last bone in each of the fingers of the front legs. After that cats are often straining the joints of the legs and spine, which can lead to chronic pain.

The Deputy leader of the state Senate Michael Gianaris compared the procedure with amputation of a human finger.

The bill made exceptions for «therapeutic purposes» — when the deletion is good for the health of the cat.

Veterinarians disagree on whether declawing cats is inhumane.
