A mother who gave birth to a child in a prison cell in Denver (Colorado), filed a lawsuit on the Sheriff’s office of Denver and Denver Health Medical Center. Diana Sanchez claims that her rights were violated.
«This case is incredibly alarming,’ said Mari Newman, the attorney for Sanchez. She went into labor, water broke. She immediately told the guard and the nurse but no one responded».
Law firm Marie Newman provided an edited video from surveillance cameras, which shows that severe birth lasted the woman about five or six hours on 31 July 2018. «Denver Health provides high quality medical care to thousands of inmates every year. Our patients are our number one priority and we work hard to ensure they receive adequate medical care. Since it is pending consideration of the legal issue, we can’t comment on it.»
According to the Sheriff’s office of Denver, Diana Sanchez was in the medical unit and under the care of medical professionals when she gave birth.
«But to stop this from happening again, we changed their policy to provide immediate transportation of pregnant prisoners to hospital when they give birth,» said the Sheriff’s office.
«They were lucky that the woman was still alive, but hardly a justification to continue to assert that there is nothing wrong with that, they made Diana Sanchez to give birth without medical help in a dirty prison cell next to the toilet,» said the lawyer Newman.
