A woman from Pennsylvania got on that was posing as the patient’s cancer to defraud people of thousands of dollars. The truth came to light when the woman’s husband spoke about it invented the scheme to the authorities.

Jessica Cornell Smith (32 years) from Uwchlan township was arrested Monday after her husband told the authorities that Jessica lied about his illness to raise more than $10 thousand donation to medical bills, according to news station WCAU.

«This is a difficult situation in which she took advantage of the kindness of others,» said assistant attorney of Chester County Michael noone.

Prosecutors said that Smith claimed that he suffers from a rare form of colon cancer and created a page to raise funds on GoFundMe and Facebook, where he asked people to help her pay for medical bills, for travel expenses to the hospital and care of the child.

«She very vaguely told about their diagnosis and treatment, and post a photo, such as selfie on the bathroom floor, apparently it is «ready to surrender but, please, transfer money for treatment»,» — said a friend of Smith Terry Coleman.

Smith also allegedly posed as a nurse in the local medical center to convince her employers to give her the weekend for treatment. Officials also cite episod: she lied about the death of his father, to ask for another day off from work.

«She enjoyed the generosity of other people and lied about the cancer,» the nun told KYW-TV. «She also lied about her father’s death to get an extra day off from work».

Husband Smith told authorities that she doesn’t have cancer and it covers medical insurance to his employer. He brought the paper to prove that his insurance is not made up of deductions in the amount of $1250.

The police questioned Smith, who showed them some papers, where it was argued that she’s doing chemo and removed part of the colon. But further investigation pointed to the fact that no procedure it is not carried out, said officials.

On Monday, Smith appeared in court on charges of theft by deception and receiving stolen property. She was released on bail and the next hearing is scheduled for November 12.

A representative of GoFundMe said they are cooperating with law enforcement authorities to return the money collected for Smith. It is still unknown whether the return of money collected on Facebook. The company did not respond to a request for comment.
