In California, teachers will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19

California Governor Gavin Newsom will announce on Wednesday that teachers and other school workers will either be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or undergo regular testing.

A new directive that Newsom is due on Wednesday will make California the first state in the country to implements similar rules. Sources told CNN that they will take effect in mid-October.

School districts in San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and Long Beach have already taken such action. The state's largest school district, Los Angeles, also requires weekly testing for COVID-19, but vaccinations are not currently required.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, expressed his support for vaccinations teachers.

“I'm going to upset some people with my answer, but I think we should,” he told MSNBC on Tuesday, when asked if he thought teachers should be mandated to get vaccinated.

“The situation is critical now,” Fauci added.

“We've had over 615,000 deaths, and now there is a big spike [of cases] and fall, school season, is approaching. This is very serious. ”

California has more than 1,000 school districts, employing more than 300,000 teachers and about 6.1 million students.
