Seven Capitol cops sue Trump and far-right groups

Thursday, seven US Capitol police officers filed a lawsuit against former President Trump, Trump ally Roger Stone, and members of right-wing extremist groups over their role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

The civil lawsuit alleges that Trump, acting in concert with groups such as The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, engaged in acts of domestic terrorism designed to illegally keep him in power despite losing the 2020 election.

The plaintiffs, five of whom are blacks say these efforts were fueled by defendants promoting white supremacist conspiracy theories and lying that the elections were rigged.

not just an attack on individuals, but an attack on democracy itself,” said Damon Hewitt, president of Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, who represents the officers.

«This was a blatant attempt to suppress the votes of millions of Americans, especially black voters.»

Complaint filed in federal court in Washington , DC, follows several similar lawsuits filed in recent months, but is the first to accuse Trump of colluding with far-right groups to use «force, intimidation and threats» to prevent Congress from confirming a Joe Biden victory.
