Classes in California’s schools will start later

Lawmakers want to give California students the extra minutes of sleep. In the coming weeks they will consider the bill according to which the lessons should begin no earlier than 8:30. According to the author of the bill No. 328, Senator Anthony Portantino, the innovation will have a beneficial effect on the academic achievement, health and emotional state of the children.

The official introduced the bill in February. His proposal, he justified the recommendations of pediatricians. In multiple studies, experts have shown that additional sleep time, reduces the percentage of depressive disorders, misbehavior and destructive behavior among students. In school districts where classes begin later improved attendance and have higher average scores.

Currently, the policy is already in force in Davis, Sacramento and 11 schools unified school district of Los Angeles.

However, the bill has many opponents. Some of them are convinced that innovation will create inconvenience in families in which parents before I go to work and used the road to deliver children to school. Others fear that later on returning from school, students will not be in time for lessons in sports and creative pursuits.

Anyway, the final decision for state Senate: vote plan to hold in August.
