If you ask me, what kind of nominees on the award «Oscar» in the category «Best film» personally, I wish the victory, the answer is unequivocal. This stunningly beautiful and highly discussed movie «Form of water» which is fascinating lamp atmosphere, talented acting, melodramatic plot and sumptuous picture. But, everything in order.
The picture of the «Form of water» is a sophisticated fairy tale for adults, written by the Mexican genius Guillermo del Toro. However, it is possible to go further and to say that «water» has become the most successful brainchild of Director, earning the top prize at the Venice film festival, two Golden globe and six nominations for «Oscar».
The plot unfolds during a dark time in 60-ies of the last century in the midst of Cold war between the USSR and the USA. The main character becomes a modest and unremarkable girl Eliza Esposito (Sally Hawkins) working in a secret military laboratory in Baltimore. Due to trauma experienced in childhood, Eliza has lost the ability to speak, which makes it even more invisible.
And then one day in the lab bring a new «object» of study, which actually turns out to be a living creature — amphibian whose appearance (or rather who) is a bit like a human. Eliza begins to observe the creature and gradually arise between them touching feelings. When she learns that her unusual friends are about to kill for the sake of science, she goes to desperate measures and arranges escape for amphibians.
As mentioned in one of the now popular series, the hell «beauty and the Beast», here’s a story worthy of Disney. However, the tale here is not good and dark and naturalistic. And no matter what plot twists may seem predictable in the tales so often happens. This stunning film makes the poetic power with which del Toro creates a transformative relationship between the wounded frogman (sorry, couldn’t resist) and the unfortunate woman who finally found someone who is not looking through it.
The completeness of the picture adds a secondary characters, each of which has its own complicated history. Neighbor Eliza, Giles – talented artist and secretly gay, secretly in love with a waiter from one network institution, her partner and a friend, Zelda knowing sign language, selflessly trying to improve relations with her husband, who don’t deserve it. Del Toro skillfully plays with the formula, contrasting the sincerity of real feelings of the imaginary right of those who consider themselves above the rest and worthy.
In addition, under the beautiful wrapping historic surroundings and science fiction seamlessly coexist such diametrically different genres of movies as romance, spy Thriller and Comedy. In the «Form of water» a lot of joking and kidding, I really do, like everything else in this picture, even the humor here gives gloom.
So, in the end, we get the eternal story of forbidden love, is upside down on his head thanks to the skillful addition of elements of science fiction. Del Toro, as if effortlessly, transmits canonical and familiar to the gnashing of teeth, the stories that, no matter what, look beneficial and fresh, thanks to inspired acting and scrupulous attention to all possible detail from the overall color scheme of the film to references and allusions, which we generously poured journalist and filmmaker. But the main message of the film to catch is quite simple – don’t be afraid to follow your heart and surrender to your feelings, because sometimes that’s exactly what you need to get your «happily ever after».
