Vintage Lockheed will turn into a bar-restaurant TWA

Unique transportation last week, October 10, could watch the drivers moving out of Boston / Boston via interstate 495: a powerful truck accompanied by a car of the convoy carrying the fuselage of the famous aircraft — the Lockheed Constellation L-1649A Starliner.

60-year-old Lockheed, white with a bright red logo on the fuselage Trans World Air Lines, is sent to the international airport John F. Kennedy in new York. They were developed by designers Kelly Johnson and Hall Hibbard to order the eccentric owner of TWA, Howard Hughes.

The maximum speed of innovation for that time the plane was equal to 550 km/h and pressurized cabin allowed pilots to raise the car high (7300 m), safely and smoothly avoiding bad weather. High speed and range made the airliner Lockheed Constellation favorite airlines. The family of these aircraft were operated by the largest airlines not only in the USA (Trans World Air Lines, Pan American World Airways, Eastern Air Lines) and other countries (Air France, Trans-Canada Airlines, Lufthansa, etc.)

This week, after several months of restoration at the airport Auburn-Lewiston (district of Androscoggin, Maine), workers loaded the fuselage and 116-foot tail of the iconic plane on the trucks and went to new York.

The plane stayed in the airport for about 30 years. And now Simon Graham restored the interior of the cabin of the legend, with an area of 744 sq. ft. His task was to recreate in the salon the same situation that was in 1958 (the year of its release).

As soon as the plane arrives at JFK, he’ll be placed in a hangar for the winter, and since spring will begin work on the installation plane of the bar-restaurant.
