In may in upstate new York will host a colourful Albany Tulip Festival: get acquainted with Dutch culture

The usual spring colors are always felt in a new way! After months of dull winter a fresh and bright palette of the surrounding landscape attracts the eye, fills the heart with joy, gives positive mood. And not the last role in a Sunny mood play the first spring flowers. In new York in March, bloom delicate primroses, in April townspeople admiring the bright yellow daffodils and flowering gardens with Oriental cherry blossoms and magnolias. And in may, all waiting for the season of tulips! An incredible number of varieties of this spring flower can be seen at the Albany Tulip Festival 2019, but to come here is in advance, and here’s why!

What is the Albany Tulip Festival?

The first Tulip Festival was organized in celebration of Dutch cultural heritage of Albany. The first Dutch settlement in this part of the United States appeared in 1610, it was located South of the present Albany and went down in history under the name of Fort Nassau. For the first time the Tulip Festival held may 14, 1949, during the opening of Washington Park. Every year before the festival of colors, a number of traditional concepts — for example, cleaning the streets: girls in authentic Dutch costumes and shoes brushes clean and wash State and Lodge Streets.

The order of the day for Friday may 10:

At 11:30 near the town hall concert will be held. The main instrument — a Carillon is a musical instrument of bells specially selected (at least 23 pieces) and is configured with a chromatic number in the range from 2 to 6 octaves. Albany music program will be performed at the historic 1927 Carillon consisting of 49 bells, the weight of which varies from 27 to 11 200 pounds (12-5080 kg).

At noon will take place the same cleaning of streets and Street Scrubbing.

At 12:30 will begin the final program — charity Tulip Festival Luncheon at 90 State Street. Details here.

When and where will the annual Tulip Festival?

The 71st annual Tulip Festival will be held on 11 and 12 may 2019. Location — Washington Park, located between the streets of Washington, Madison, Lake S. and Willett.

Guests expect these days from 11:00 to 18:00.

If you want to know more information about tulips, the history of breeding varieties, etc., for these purposes will be organized special Tulip Tours:

  • 6-8 may at 14:00 and 17:00;
  • May 9 at 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00;
  • May 10 — at 10:00, 13:00 and 17:30.

The annual event boasts not only a huge number of tulips, are presented here in more than 150 different varieties, but also exhibitions of fine art, live music, a Royal ball of tulips, crowning of the Queen of tulips, the annual award «mother of the year» and a lot of entertainment for younger visitors, which the organizers did an exceptional job, creating an entire area with interactive games, training and educational programs.

And yet…

In Washington Park in Albany Tulip Festival 2019 will be free access to CDTA Shuttle service. Guest service will be conducted from three points every 20 to 25 minutes (depending on traffic on the road):

  • Elk Street Parking. Located behind the State Education Building, the landmarks stop signs Elk and Hawk.
  • Eagle Street Parking. Located on the corner of Eagle Street and Madison Avenue.
  • Albany Medical Center Parking. Located near Robin Street and provided for those visitors who need more help or if they move in a wheelchair. This Shuttle takes passengers to the entrance of the Park on Madison Avenue / New Scotland.
