How many people need to save one raccoon? These firefighters know exactly

Rescuers heard the call for help around 10 a.m. Thursday, and the fire brigade immediately left into a residential area of Newton, Massachusetts.

«We sent our team» — said captain Eric Frick of Newton Fire Department. «They have the equipment and experience to rescue people from the grating of the sewer».

Only this time, it was necessary to save not the person. Firefighters got a call of a cyclist who was riding to work, which saw the terrified little raccoon stuck in a very uncomfortable position. He got his head stuck in the grille, and tiny paws he desperately clung to the metal.

Rescuers initially believed that will be able to quickly deal with soap and water, which according to Frick operates in «99% cases», but a simple task turned into a 2 hour rescue raccoon with the participation of 8 people.

When the raccoon covered in soapy water, firefighters tried to get him out, but they failed. Frick said: «I think they were surprised that it didn’t help».

But rescuers didn’t give up. At some point they removed all the bars and laid it on the grass. When near the scene of the incident stopped the ambulance people came up with another idea: to use the technique that is used when you need to remove person stuck ring. Just need to wind the dental floss or fishing line to help to relieve swelling. But it did not help.

From the neighboring town of Waltham came up from animal control, with whom was a vet. Frick said, «the Raccoon had to introduce a sedative, so he stopped fighting. He resisted during the whole process of salvation.»

When the raccoon stopped struggling, rescuers finally were able to release him. Frick added that the animal will hold to Waltham Animal Control. They will monitor him and released into the wild after the action of sleeping pills and as soon as the vet confirms that he’s healthy.

«Everyone was very happy that it ended and he was released,» he said. «I hope he recovers and can continue to live their lives,» added Frick.
