Luxembourg became the first country in the world with free public transport

Luxembourg became the first country in the world that offered free public transport system, aiming to reduce the number of traffic jams on the roads.

Now all residents can use the free trains, trams and buses.

François Bausch, Minister of mobility and public works, announced that the program has earned today, February 29 and not March 1, as previously reported.

According to The Independent, last opportunity to pay a fixed cost of 2 Euro (us$2.2) was on the bus route No. 6 at 23.59 on 28 February.

«Since 2020 is a leap year, and tomorrow the scheduled concerts and festivals, it was decided to make public transport free tomorrow that all were free to join the public events,» — said the representative of the government of Luxembourg.

Here is how such a radical solution to explain the power of the state: a significant part of the costs will be covered through the elimination of tax benefits for passengers, which will further discourage the use of private cars in Luxembourg, where traffic jams are a serious problem, especially in the center.

However, not everyone is convinced that this will help solve the problem. Claude Moyen, a teacher who travels by train to school in the town of Diekirch, told The Independent that he feared that the quality of the trips may be affected.

«I’m not sure if you will make free public transportation here in Luxembourg, more people leave their cars,» he said.
