The United States will lift economic sanctions against Sudan

The United States canceled a number of economic sanctions against Sudan, thereby emphasizing the significant warming of relations between the two countries. This is stated in the official report of the US state Department.

This move follows 16 months of diplomatic negotiations, initiated under former US President Barack Obama. Themselves, sanctions were imposed in mid-1990-ies because of the allegations of the International criminal court against the Sudan leader in genocide.

In accordance with the decision entering into force on 12 October, the Sudan will be able to gain access to previously frozen assets and to begin a new phase of trade relations with the United States after a 20-year embargo.

Some of the sanctions in question have already been temporarily lifted in January, which enabled Sudan to purchase goods from the United States. In response, the state undertook to demonstrate progress on the five so-called «tracks» that include the preservation of regional agreements on the cease-fire, the strengthening of cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and improving humanitarian access throughout the property, improving the situation with observance of human rights and the peaceful resolution of regional issues with the participation of the United States.

At the same time, the United States will continue to «exert pressure» on Sudan to progress «not fade away». For this purpose, some sanctions will continue to apply.
